Obligation to defend NATO allies does not extend to Ukraine, won't sent US troops: President Joe Biden

The US President said the moral and legal obligation to defend NATO allies if they are under attack does not extend to Ukraine as it is not a member of the 30-member bloc. In addition to this, Biden said that he hoped to announce a meeting with Russia and other NATO countries by Friday.

US President Joe Biden on Wednesday said that situating American troops on the ground in Ukraine to hinder any possible Russian invasion was "not on the table", news agency Reuters reported. The US President also said the moral and legal obligation to defend NATO allies if they are under attack does not extend to Ukraine as it is not a member of the 30-member bloc. In addition to this, Biden said that he hoped to announce a meeting with Russia and other NATO countries by Friday.

1. US President Biden on Tuesday warned President Vladimir Putin that Russia will face a strong Western economic blowback if it tries to attack Ukraine, however, the United States will not send its troops on the ground in Ukraine.

2. In the two-hour summit on Ukraine, Russia had said that it does not plan to invade Ukraine. However, he pointed out that  Moscow sees Ukraine's growing alliance with the Western nations as a threat to Russian security. In addition to this, he also demanded that the NATO alliance keep clear of Russia

3. "Russia is seriously interested in obtaining reliable legal guarantees that will exclude NATO's eastward expansion and the deployment of offensive strike weapons in countries adjacent to Russia," the Kremlin said earlier in the summit

Biden said that he is hoping that by Friday there would be an announcement of high-level meetings with Russia and at least four major NATO allies for further discussion on the matters raised in the two-hour Russia US meeting. He also said that the high-level meeting intends to discuss the future of Russia's concerns relative to NATO writ large, news agency Reuters reported. He further said that the meeting will also calm the current situations along the eastern front.

4." That is not on the table," Biden on Wednesday said when asked if U.S. troops would be used to stop a Russian invasion of Ukraine, news agency Reuters reported. added.

5. But as an economic counterattack, the US President has said  Russia will face severe consequences from the US and its allies if Moscow decides to attack Ukraine and such a harsh decision could also put his Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline supply to Europe at risk.
