Chavan's resignation, conveyed in a letter to state unit president Nana Patole, underscores a trend of prominent figures exiting the Congress fold, posing challenges for the party as it gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In a letter addressed to state Congress president Nana Patole, the 65-year-old Chavan declared his resignation as a primary member of the longstanding party. Additionally, he tendered his resignation as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) to assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar.

The timing of the release is significant, as it precedes the government's tabling of a ‘white paper’ on the “mismanagement” of the economy prior to 2014. This move by the Congress aims to draw attention to alleged shortcomings in governance under the Modi administration.

The Congress central leadership has announced the formation of the 28-member West Bengal Pradesh Congress Election Committee, with Chowdhury appointed as its Chairman.
