Situation to normalise in three-four days, Union Minister on coal crisis

The Union minister noted that despite adverse circumstances, country recorded highest coal production in October. He asserted that the price of coal in the international market has suddenly risen sharply, which resulted to reduction in import. While on the other hand heavy rains affected the domestic coal production significantly.
Coal inventory critical, India stares at power crisis this festive season

Over half of the country's 135 coal-fired plants are sitting on coal stocks of less than three days, while in others as well, fuel inventories are well below the stipulated 22-day stock, data from the Central Electricity Authority showed. The situation is critical for state-run power generation units where poor financial condition of utilities has prevented them from proper stocking of coal.

Four countries in South Asia -- Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka -- have previously considered or are currently considering coal. Together, they account for 13 per cent of the global pre-construction pipeline (37.4GW), said a new report by climate change think tank E3G that assessed the global pipeline of new coal projects.
Unnecessary coal plants could waste India's 247,421 cr: Report

These surplus 'zombie' plants, assets that would be neither dead nor alive, would require Rs 247,421 crore ($33 billion) of investment, yet are projected to lie idle or operate at uneconomic capacity factors due to surplus generation capacity in the system. According to the analysis by Ember and Climate Risk Horizons, the private sector's unnecessary investment on 'zombie' coal plants will be Rs 62,912 crore.
Centre to regulate coal supplies to non-conforming state utilities

As per the decisions taken post a review meeting taken by Power Secretary Alok Kumar to assess the availability of coal for thermal power plants, captive coal mine companies have been given a notice of one week to increase their production to more than 85 per cent of their targets. In case this is not achieved, the Centre would regulate supply of linkage coal to such states/gencos.
Govt looks at revising coal stock rules to address fuel shortage

At a review meeting of thermal power plants, Union Power Minister R.K. Singh asked the power secretary to look at the possibility of reducing the benchmark of 14 days of coal stocks to 10 days for identifying and diverting coal to plants with extremely depleted stocks. Once implemented, this could address the issues of a number of thermal plants having critical level of coal supplies while others functioning with adequate or excess coal stocks.
Aluminium industry stares at critical coal shortage

Aluminium is a metal of strategic importance and an essential commodity for diversified sectors, crucial for the nation's economy. Aluminium smelting requires uninterrupted and high-quality power supply for production which can be met only through in-house CPPs. Such drastic curtailment of coal supplies will bring the industry to a standstill as it has been left with no time to devise any mitigation plan to continue sustainable operations.
China's coal generation rises, India sees a decline: Study

Globally there was a record fall in coal generation in 2020, which was mirrored in India and other top coal power countries. China is now responsible for more than half (53 per cent) of the world's coal-fired electricity.
