24 coal mines record 100% production in July

According to the provisional statistics of the Ministry of Coal, during July this year, Coal India Ltd (CIL), Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) and captive mines/others registered a growth of 11.12 per cent and 44.37 per cent by producing 47.33 MT and 9.80 MT coal, respectively. However, SCCL registered a negative growth of 32.51 per cent during the month.

The global price pressure eroded India's import volumes and reduced its power plant stockpiles to critically low levels just as an unrelenting heat wave pushed demand to unprecedented levels. The country generates more than 75% of its power from coal, and is the world's third-largest producer of electricity at 1,383 TWh/year.
Domestic coal production up by 28%

Due to this, coal imports for blending by the domestic coal based (DCB) power plants have dropped to 8.11 MT in the year 2021-22, which has been the lowest coal import in the last eight years. The imported coal based (ICB) power plants had imported coal more than 45 MT per year from 2016-17 to 2019-20.
Power sector coal import comes down by 40%

"The decline in coal imports during 2021-22 is largely due to decrease in imports by the Power Sector which came down from 45 MT in 2020-21 to 27 MT in 2021-22, a decline of almost 40 per cent. The decline is more steep if we compare coal imports by power sector in 2021-22 to pre-Covid year of 2019-20 when such imports were 69 MT.
India aims to cut power output from 81 coal plants, replace green energy

The letter, dated May 26, and sent to energy departments of the state and Central government, noted that according to current regulations, thermal power plants need to operate at a minimum of 55 per cent but reduction of generation from such plants is possible to a minimum of 40 per cent. The Union power ministry has selected those power plants that charge higher tariffs to reduce the price of power delivered to the consumer, S&P Global Commodity Insights said.
Coal production rose to 34 million tonnes in first half of May

The total dispatch of coal has been at 37.18 MT, recording an increase of 15.87 per cent as compared to the corresponding period of last year. The total coal dispatch including non-CIL coal producing units has been to the tune of 71.77 MT for the entire month of April, registering a growth of 9.39 per cent on a year-on-year basis.
Coal consumers highlight spiralling coal auction prices, seek urgent relief

In its representation addressed to the Union Minister of Coal, the CCAI has now sought urgent support in providing relief to beleaguered coal buyers in the country, many of whom have been compelled to idle their captive power plants in the absence of sufficient supplies.

Coal India to offer its 20 closed underground mines to private players

"Extractable reserve in the closed/discontinued coal mines is around 380 million tonnes... 30-40 million tonnes of coal can be easily extracted from the mines," he said at an Investors meet in Mumbai, an official statement said.
Under development global coal power declined by 13%: Report

The report finds that after rising in 2020 for the first time since 2015, the total coal power capacity under development declined 13 per cent in 2021, from 525 gigawatts (GW) to 457 GW, a record low. Thirty-four countries have new coal plants under consideration, down from 41 countries in January 2021.
