MCL records 14% growth in coal production during 2021-22
Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd (CIL), on Friday said it has produced 168 million tonnes (MT) of coal during the financial year 2021-22 registering a growth of about 14 per cent over the previous fiscal. The company said it has set new milestones in all the performance parameters vis-a-vis coal production, despatch and overburden removal (OBR).
Global coal prices at record high, to increase India's import bill
The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia is likely to have a bearing on the supply of thermal coal, while direct or indirect sanctions from the western countries are also expected to put an upward pressure on its prices. Currently, international coal prices are at their lifetime high at above $400 per tonne. Russia accounts for around 20 per cent of the global thermal coal exports.
Coal shortage now at alarming levels, say aluminium producers
In its representation to the Ministry, the AAI has lauded the combined efforts by the Ministry of Coal and Coal India Ltd. in reviving domestic coal production, which has helped ease the coal supply crisis for the Power Sector. The steps undertaken by the Ministry increased the overall daily rakes dispatched from 242 rakes/day in September 2021 to 289 rakes/day in December 2021. This has drastically strengthened the coal stocks of the Power Sector to around 10 days.

Coal shortage cripples non-power sector as supplies to power sector prioritised
The council has highlighted a recent decision of Coal India to enhance the rake supplies for power sector to 296 rakes per day. The decision dated December 2, 2021 has been taken in order to increase coal stocks level in power plants to 14 days from current level of around 10 days. Coal Ministry's move to increase coal rakes for the Power Sector will deprive Captive Power Plants (CPPs) from coal rakes.
Coal, petroleum products' production fuel Oct core industry growth
On a sequential basis, the Index of Eight Core Industries' (ICI) readings for last month showed a faster rate of expansion at 7.5 per cent (provisional) from a rise of 4.5 per cent (provisional). Similarly, on a year-on-year basis, the ICI readings during the period under review was higher than (-) 0.5 per cent reported for October, 2020. The ICI index comprises 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), and comprises coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement, and electricity.
Over 13mn dependent on coal economy in India: Study
The transition out of coal will have the highest impact on the people in the states of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana, the study by the National Foundation for India (NFI), a think tank, and launched by Secretary, Ministry of Coal, Anil Jain, said. The coal transition that formed the basis of the study is with reference to India's agreement at the recently concluded COP26 at Glasgow to a clause in the 'Glasgow Climate Pact' that calls for a phase down of unabated coal power while recognising the need for support towards just transitions.

Coal supplies to non-power sector plants may be kept suspended
Southern Eastern Coalfields, a subsidiary of Coal India has finalised the supply matrix of coal rakes to critical power plants after a meeting held by the Coal Ministry. The power plants where coal rakes will be provided are Rajpura, HRVUNL, Kawai, Akaltara, Binjkote, DSPM, Pathad, Sabarmati, GSECL, Uchpanda, Annupur, Seoni, MPPGCL, Amrawati, Warora, Dhariwal, Tirora, NTPC, and Mahagenco.
Flooding pushes coal prices to record highs in China
Heavy rains have forced the closure of 60 coal mines in Shanxi province, China's largest coal mining hub, according to a statement released on Saturday by the provincial government's Emergency Management Bureau. The province is home to a quarter of the country's coal production.
