Coal imports see 25% fall in last 3 years as India aims to enhance domestic production
In fact, coal imports have gradually come down since 2019-20, as in 2020-21, it was 215.25 million tonnes while in 2021-22, it further came down to 208.93 million tonnes. In 2022-23, it further slid below the 200 million tonnes mark to 186 million tonnes till December 2022.

According to sources privy to developments, the Coal Ministry has said that its current daily production is more than the daily national requirement, and therefore, it is fully prepared to meet the peak demand, mainly from thermal power plants. Meanwhile, the Power Ministry on its part, has directed its gas-based plants to run at full capacity.
Coal production rises 15% during April-February 2022-23
Coal India Ltd (CIL) reported production of 619.70 million tonnes up to February 2023 as compared to 542.38 million tonnes during the same period of the last fiscal, an increase of 14.26 per cent. Total coal despatch was 793.86 million tonnes during April 2022-February 2023 as compared to 740.96 million tonnes during same period of last year, a growth of 7.14 per cent which shows steady and efficient amount of coal despatch to various sectors.
Combined Index of Eight Core Industries up by 7.8% in Jan 2023
The production of fertilisers, coal, electricity, steel, natural gas, cement and refinery products increased while production of crude oil declined in January 2023 over the corresponding month of last year, said the government data released on Tuesday. ICI measures combined and individual performance of production of eight core industries viz. coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement, and electricity.
No coal shortage in country, says Centre
In the current financial year up to January 2023, the country has produced about 698.24 million tonnes of coal as against 602.49 million tonnes produced during the same period of last year, with a growth of about 16 per cent, Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi told the Lok Sabha in a written reply to a question on coal supplies.
JSW Steel, Ambuja Cement, Vedanta, Jindal Power among bidders for commercial coal blocks
The Coal Ministry had, on January 30, received a total of 96 bids for the 36 mines for the sixth round and second attempt of fifth round of commercial coal block auctions, which it had launched on November 3, 2022. Monday (January 30) was the last date for submission of technical bids for these rounds. The bids were opened on Tuesday in the presence of the bidders.
Combined index of eight core industries rose 7.4% in Dec 2022
In April-December 2022, the core industries' growth was 8 per cent, compared to 12.6 per cent in the year-ago period. The growth was mainly due to rise in seven out of the eight core sectors, except for crude oil production. The eight core sectors are coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity.
Govt receives 99 bids for 36 coal mines under commercial auction
Monday was the last date for submission of technical bids for these rounds. According to official sources, for the sixth round, two or more bids were received for 25 coal mines, a single bid for seven mines, and 10 bids for four mines in the second attempt of the fifth round.
Mahanadi Coalfields expects 13% increase in production to 190 mn tonnes in 2022-23
This will be 13.09 per cent more than 168 million tonnes production recorded in 2021-22 by MCL. MCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director O.P. Singh told media persons that the production target for 2022-23 was 176 million tonnes, however the company is 21 per cent ahead of the target, and expects to reach 190 million tonnes by end of this fiscal.
