Government aims to produce 1 billion tonnes coal in 2023-24
A total of 290 mines are operational under the CIL, out of which 97 produce more than 1 million tonnes per year. These targets were fixed during a review meeting conducted by Coal Secretary Amritlal Meena on Wednesday, where all subsidiaries of CIL were present.
Coal India bullish on pursuing projects through MDO mode
MDOs, sources say, bring to the table mutually beneficial technology infusion, economically viable operations and increased production. Since contracts offered to them are on long-term basis, allied infrastructure at mine projects also would be developed by these private players.
Coal Ministry to enhance first mile connectivity projects
These projects will be implemented by 2026-27. The ministry has already undertaken 55 FMC projects of 526 million tonnes per annum capacity with an investment of Rs 18,000 crore. Out of these, eight projects of 95.5 million tonnes per annum capacity have been commissioned and the remaining will be commissioned by 2025.
Govt identifies new blocks for enhancing coking coal production
Coal India Ltd (CIL) plans to increase raw coking coal production from existing mines to up to 26 million tonnes by 2025. The country's largest producer of coal has also identified nine new mines with peak rate capacity of about 22 million tonnes, to enhance coking coal production, sources added. Coking coal is essentially required for production of steel.
India's coal dependency to stay; geopolitical brakes on shift to renewables
India's coal imports, which had reached its peak of 212 million tonnes in 2014-15, declined to 191 million tonnes in 2016-17. However since 2017-18 onwards, they again showed a rising trend. In that year, coal imports rose to 208 million tonnes, going further up to 235.35 million tonnes in 2018-19 and to 248 million tonnes in 2019-20. India imports the dry fuel to bridge the gap between demand and supply.
Financiers prefer wind and solar over coal: Study
The fifth edition of Coal vs Renewable Financial Analysis, authored by Climate Trends and Centre for Financial Accountability (CFA), was released at CFA's annual energy finance conference hosted in collaboration with IIT Madras on Tuesday. While the total funding for new energy projects in 2021 is 60 per cent lower compared to 2017 levels, for the first time since reporting it was found that there was no new project finance for coal power projects in year 2021.
Coal production rose to 75.87 mn tonnes in Nov
According to the coal ministry data, in November 2022, Coal India Ltd (CIL) registered a growth of 12.82 per cent, whereas Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and other captive mines registered a growth of 7.84 per cent and 6.87 per cent respectively. Out of the top 37 mines in coal production as many as 24 mines produced more than 100 per cent and production of five mines stood between 80 and 100 per cent in terms of output.
Coal production for April-Nov period up 17% to touch 524mn tonnes
Coal India Ltd's (CIL) production was 412.63 million tonnes till November as compared to 353.41 million tonnes recorded during the corresponding period of last year, thus showing a growth of 16.76 per cent. To ensure faster transportation of coal, efforts are on to augment rail connectivity infrastructure for all major mines under PM-Gati Shakti, sources pointed out further.
Index of eight core industries rise by 0.1% in October
The production of fertilisers, steel, coal and electricity generation increased in October 2022 over the corresponding month of last year, according to a data released by the Commerce ministry said. Fertilisers production increased by 5.4 per cent in October, 2022 over October, 2021.
Coal production rose 18% to 448 million tonnes in October
According to official sources, the Coal Ministry is planning to build a 30 million tonnes stock at domestic coal-based plants by the end of this month. This would help in augmenting the stock of thermal power plants to up to 45 million tonnes by March 31, 2023, they added.
