The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, tweeted on X that he had heard "explosions" in Srinagar. Soon after, numerous city residents posted videos on X, depicting what they thought were tracer rounds from anti-aircraft missiles attacking incoming drones in the darkness above.
Abdullah's tweet was hours after India and Pakistan had both announced a ceasefire pact. US President Donald Trump had also made the same declaration on the two nuclear powers.
Abdullah, in his tweet, posted, "What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar."
He later posted a video update, saying: "This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up."
By 9:52 pm, the shelling at the Line of Control (LoC) and explosions in Srinagar had stopped, sources informed.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi posted on X that drones had been seen in Kutch district. He cautioned, "Several drones have been seen in the Kutch district. A complete blackout will be enforced now. Please remain safe, don't panic," he urged.
The Border Security Force (BSF) also posted a tweet on X confirming the killing of sub-inspector Md Imteyaz, who was martyred during cross-border firing in the RS Pura sector of Jammu region.
In Ludhiana, the district commissioner (DC) was reassuring the public that there was no reason for alarm at present. He added that a blackout could be imposed depending on the course of the situation and that the armed forces and the district administration were keeping close watch on developments.
In Patiala, the DC also spoke to the public, stating there was nothing to worry about but ensuring that they would inform the public if any impending danger existed. The DC also added that a blackout would be imposed in case it was needed.
In Amritsar, the DC confirmed ceasefire violation reports and also stated that there would be a blackout if need be. The DC instructed the residents, "I advise everyone to please get ready for a blackout to be enforced if the situation demands it and be at home. We have practiced this drill a few times, so please don't panic. It is just a precautionary measure."
