'One sun, one world, one grid': PM Modi hails solar power grid at COP26 summit in Glasgow

On the second day of the COP26 event, Green Grids Initiative (GGI) as part of the One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) or the GGI-OSOWOG combining a massive increase in solar and wind power with international grids in every continent, connecting energy-rich locations such as sunny deserts and windy coastlines was launched.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that solar power can help achieve the environmental balance that has been disturbed by mankind during the industrial revolution.

Speaking at the session on ‘Accelerating Clean Technology Innovation and Deployment,’ PM Modi emphasized the need of accelerating the use of clean energy, especially solar energy.

"The industrial revolution was powered by fossil fuels. Their use helped many countries develop themselves but made our earth poor. The race for fossil fuels has also led to geopolitical tensions, but technology has given us a wonderful alternative," PM Modi said.

PM Modi then discussed the importance of the sun and the alternatives it offers to the planet in terms of clean energy.

"Sunrise and sunset dictated our lives. As long as this natural connection was there, our planet was healthy. But in the technological age, humankind, in an effort to race ahead of the sun, disturbed the balance of nature and caused great loss to the environment," the PM said.

"The energy all of the humankind consumes in an entire year is the same as what the sun gives to the Earth in one hour. This energy is clean and sustainable, the only challenge is that solar energy is only available during the daytime and also depends on climatic conditions. One sun, one world, one grid is the solution to this problem. A worldwide solar power grid can ensure clean energy everywhere, every time," the PM added.

Before embarking, Modi interacted with the Indian community and enjoyed playing 'dhol' along with the contingent there. On the sidelines, the Prime Minister held multiple bilateral meetings.
