German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Friday that his government has no plans to officially recognise a Palestinian state.Scholz stated during a press conference with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro on Friday that there is "no reason" to accept the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a distinct state.
Scholz highlighted "There is no clarity about the territory of the state, about all other issues related to it," Scholz said. He suggested that matters were "not yet that far."
He emphasized the need for "a negotiated solution between Israel and the Palestinians that amounts to a two-state solution" in which the Palestinian Authority would govern both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.\n\n\"But we're still a long way off that," Scholz remarked.
He emphasised the importance of securing a "to achieve a long-term ceasefire" and "for all parties to commit to the two-state solution."
In contrast, Ireland, Spain, and Norway have declared plans to formally recognise a Palestinian state by the end of the month, much to the dismay of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing government.
Montenegro stated that Portugal would not participate in this step at this time, however it should be noted that Portugal voted in favour of recognising Palestine's efforts to achieve full membership in the United Nations General Assembly.
Scholz stated that in recent weeks, Arab governments have made significant efforts to improve Middle Eastern security. This, he argued, should raise hopes for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
Scholz, on the other hand, cautioned that simply recognising "symbolic recognition of statehood" would be ineffective.
