As Taiwan approaches its upcoming presidential election, China has made a last-minute plea to Taiwanese voters, urging them to align with history by opposing pro-independence forces and supporting peaceful reunification.
Song Tao, China's representative for Taiwan affairs, emphasized China's unwavering opposition to "Taiwan independence." He highlighted China's commitment to safeguarding peace, fostering exchanges, enhancing cooperation, and advancing reunification, steering cross-strait relations towards peaceful development.
The rift between China and Taiwan persists, with China asserting its claim over the island, which maintains its democratic system in contrast to China's one-party rule. Song's message aimed to encourage Taiwanese citizens to choose the path of peaceful development and reunification.
The presidential election in Taiwan is poised to replace the incumbent, Tsai Ing-wen, known for her firm stance against China during her two-term presidency. Tsai, restricted by a two-term limit, stands against China's approach and is set to step down.
China has openly criticized Tsai and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), labeling them separatists, while discreetly supporting the pro-Beijing Kuomintang (KMT), advocating closer ties with the mainland.
The three candidates in the running include Vice President William Lai Chiang-te from DPP, Hou Yup-ih from KMT, and Ko Wen-je from the Taiwan People's Party (TPP). Pre-poll surveys suggest Lai as the frontrunner, followed by Hou and Ko.
Concerns about increased Chinese threats have heightened among Taiwanese citizens, with around 82.7% perceiving a rise in the China threat in recent years. China, under President Xi Jinping's leadership, has intensified efforts to reunify Taiwan, making it a priority in military and diplomatic agendas.
Beijing's military maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait have drawn global apprehension regarding a potential invasion, amplifying tensions between the two regions. President Xi's New Year message affirmed China's determination for reunification, calling for shared purpose and participation in the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
In response to Xi's statements, Tsai reiterated the significance of democracy in determining Taiwan's course concerning China. She emphasized the democratic principle guiding Taiwan's decisions and urged China to respect the outcome of Taiwan's election, highlighting the joint responsibility of both sides to uphold peace and stability in the strait.
