OpenAI swiftly responded to Musk's lawsuit, stating that discussions about transitioning to a for-profit structure to advance their mission were underway. However, tensions escalated as Musk reportedly pushed for a merger with Tesla or sought complete control over the company.

The co-founders of OpenAI, including Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, Sam Altman, and Wojciech Zaremba, emphasized their refusal to agree to terms granting any individual absolute control over the organization, citing a misalignment with their mission.

In May 2019, Altman publicly supported Musk's Tesla, expressing his dismay at the number of individuals rooting against the electric vehicle manufacturer.
