In the video, the candidate, Chandanji Thakor, is heard saying: "If anyone can save or protect the country is the Muslim community and if anyone can save Congress party it is the Muslim community." KHAM, increase in OBC reservation and polarisation broke Congress backbone in Gujarat
A long term strategy was planned against the Congress party in the late 60s, which was executed in a phased manner to tarnish the party's image and create anti-Congress sentiments. A few steps of the Congress worked against it, like the KHAM (Kshatriya- Harijan- Adivasi- Muslim) political strategy pushed away the Patidars and other upper classes from the Congress. As if this was not enough, a 10 per cent increase in OBC reservation in 1985 added fuel to it, creating a deep schism between the upper castes, urban voters and the Congress, says political analyst Manibhai Patel.
Advani's Rath, Chimanbhai's death spurred BJP's rise in a state where it barely existed
Resultantly in 1995 for the first time the BJP formed the government in the state by itself. The ECI's data shows that even though the Congress was at its peak, there were average 37% anti-Congress votes. That used to be divided between the Jan Sangh/BJP and the Janata Party or Janata Dal. The other major development that took place in the 1990s was the sudden demise of CM Chimanbhai Patel while Congress stalwarts like Madhavsinh Solanki and Jeenabhai Darji announced their retirement from active politics
Sangh means not PM Modi or VHP, all are part of it: Mohan Bhagwat
Addressing a gathering of intellectuals and prominent people in Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), Bhagwat said "India didn't become one nation on the basis of language, trading interest, political power and thought. It has become one nation on the basis of unity in diversity and Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (world is one family)." He also asserted that one person or one organisation or one political outfit can not make big change.
With BSP, Cong opting out, all eyes on Dalit votes in Mainpuri bypoll
The contest in Mainpuri, considered to be an SP bastion, is between Mulayam Singh's daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav and the BJP's Raghunath Shakya. Mulayam Singh had first contested from Mainpuri seat in 1996 and won. Since then, the seat has remained with the SP. According to the political pundits, the elections of Mainpuri were fought on the basis of caste only. This is reason why apart from the issues or wave in the byelection, both SP and BJP are eyeing the caste equations.
With PM leading from the front, BJP leaves nothing to chance in Gujarat
For BJP, Gujarat is not just a state but a laboratory and a model on the basis of which, the party separates itself from other political parties in the country, while on the other side, for Congress, which has been continuously losing elections in the state, performing brilliantly in Gujarat seems to be a question of survival this time. Meanwhile, for AAP spectacular performance in Gujarat is a necessity for strengthening its claim of being an alternative to the Congress at national level.
Independents, smaller parties turn out to be spoilers for both BJP, Cong
These Independents and state parties having little grassroots network or even presence are big spoilers because of which 28 candidates of the Congress and the BJP lost elections with as low as a 258-vote margin to as much as 27226 votes. On three seats independent candidates stood at the second place pushing the Congress or the BJP candidates to the third place.

Arun Goel will join Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey in the apex poll body. The third post of Election Commissioner in the country's top poll body has been vacant for nearly six months. After Chief EC Sushil Chandra had retired in May this year giving charge to Rajiv Kumar, the poll panel has been a two-member body only. However, after Goel assumes the charge, the top poll body will have three members - one Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.
