The Election Commission has taken action against former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, issuing a show cause notice for his remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and directing him to respond by November 25.
In the notice, the Commission referenced a complaint from the BJP, highlighting Rahul Gandhi's allegedly derogatory and disparaging comments about the Prime Minister during a public meeting in Bayatu, Rajasthan. Viewing this as a violation of the election code of conduct, the Commission has requested a response by November 25.
The Commission acted on three specific statements made by Gandhi during his address in Baytu, Barmer, on November 21. He metaphorically likened Modi's actions to that of pickpockets diverting attention before committing theft, referred to the PM as "Panauti Modi" implying bad luck, and mentioned benefits supposedly favoring a handful of industrialists at the expense of the public.
Responding to the EC's notice, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge affirmed the party's readiness to address any notices received.
Prior to this, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had also received a notice from the EC about a comment regarding an envelope related to PM Modi's temple visit.
Additionally, the Rajasthan Election Department has prohibited the advertisement of the '7 Guarantees' issued by the Congress, deeming the dissemination of this guarantee and related registration information through voice calls and ads as a breach of the code of conduct. Notices were sent to the President and General Secretary of the Rajasthan Congress by the Chief Electoral Officer in this regard.
