US Endorses Direct Talks Between India and Pakistan

"As we have said, we support direct discussions between India and Pakistan, but the pace, scope and character should be determined by those two countries, not by us," Miller said.

The United States reaffirmed on Thursday its support for direct India-Pakistan talks. Elaborating at a news briefing the same day, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, "While the US supports such a dialogue, the pace, scope and nature of such talks have to be worked out between the two countries on their own.".

Miller underscored the importance of US ties with both countries, describing them as important. He said that the US and Pakistan had a shared interest in the security issues of this region.

"We partner with Pakistan on security through our high-level counterterrorism dialogue including several counterterrorism capacity building programmes and also we support a series of US-Pakistan military-to-military engagements," Miller added.

He cited continued engagement with the Pakistani leadership as part of bilateral partnership on counter-terrorism issues by citing annual counter-terrorism dialogue and other regional security consultations.

He called India a close partner to the United States at all levels: from government-to-government to people-to-people. He underlined the good economic and cultural relations between the two countries, their cooperation in the framework of the Indo-Pacific strategy, and the like.

"We will continue to work closely with the government of India and look forward to furthering our partnership," Miller finally said.
