Scandal Hits British PM Rishi Sunak's Party Over Election Date Betting

The Metropolitan Police initially suspended a member of Sunak’s personal security team and subsequently arrested them on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party is currently embroiled in a controversy involving allegations surrounding his security detail and aides regarding bets placed on the upcoming general election date, scheduled for July 4th.

The Metropolitan Police initially suspended a member of Sunak’s personal security team and subsequently arrested them on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Simultaneously, the UK’s Gambling Commission launched an investigation into several individuals associated with the Conservative Party for allegedly placing bets on the timing of the election. While gambling is legal in the UK, placing bets based on insider information may constitute illegal activity.

“The matter was promptly referred to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, who launched an investigation. The officer in question was also relieved of their operational duties,” stated the Met Police, as reported by the BBC.

“The officer was later arrested on Monday 17th June on suspicion of misconduct in public office. They have been released on bail pending further inquiries,” the Met Police confirmed.

Recent reports by the 'Guardian' revealed that Craig Williams, a close aide to Sunak in Parliament and Tory candidate for Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr in Wales, placed a £100 bet with Ladbrokes at odds of five to one on a July election, just days before Sunak announced the unexpected summer election, deviating from the widely anticipated autumn date.

In response, Williams acknowledged his bet had prompted routine inquiries and pledged full cooperation. “I don’t want it to overshadow the campaign. I should have considered the perception,” Williams remarked.

Another Conservative candidate under scrutiny is Laura Saunders, standing for Bristol North West, and married to the party’s Director of Campaigns, Tony Lee. Saunders is reportedly part of the Gambling Commission’s investigation into election timing bets. Lee has taken a leave of absence amidst the investigation.

“The Gambling Commission oversees gambling in the public interest,” stated a commission spokesperson. “Currently, we are investigating potential offences related to the election date. This remains an active inquiry, and we cannot disclose further details at this stage. We do not confirm or deny the identities of individuals involved in our investigations.”

Under Section 42 of the UK’s Gambling Act 2005, cheating in gambling or enabling cheating is an offence. The Conservative Party emphasized the Gambling Commission’s independence and refrained from commenting further until due process concludes.

In contrast, the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, has called for Saunders’ suspension and criticized the lack of immediate action. “If this were one of my candidates, they’d be dismissed instantly,” Starmer asserted.

Addressing the allegations involving Craig Williams during the G7 Summit in Italy, Sunak expressed disappointment but declined detailed comment pending the Gambling Commission’s findings.
