Wednesday saw the visiting Warsaw Prime Minister Narendra Modi pay homage to some of the most important places here, which included The Dobry Maharaja Memorial, Kolhapur Memorial, and Monument to the Battle of Monte Cassino.
The Dobry Maharaja Memorial commemorates the gesture of compassion made by Jamsaheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja of Nawanagar, now called Jamnagar in Gujarat, during World War II. He provided shelter to more than one thousand Polish children during the war and hence has earned the term "Good Maharaja" in Poland. His gesture finds a niche in the hearts of Poles even today.
During this memorial, Prime Minister Modi got an opportunity to meet the descendants of those Polish people who were sheltered by the Jamsaheb.
Prime Minister Modi visited the Kolhapur Memorial, which is established to commemorate how the princely state of Kolhapur came ahead and contributed towards the cause of the Polish people during World War II. The camp at Valivade in Kolhapur gave refuge to close to 5,000 Polish people, comprising women and children, during the conflict.
At this memorial, he met former inmates of the Kolhapur camp and their next-generation, now retired or engaged in other vocations. In other words, the visit of PM to the memorial underlines how close the ties between India and Poland had been all these years, as their relationship has remained strong and ever-growing, said the MEA.
Further, Prime Minister Modi paid homage at the Monument to the Battle of Monte Cassino, which immortalizes feats of courage and sacrifice of soldiers from Poland, India, and other nations who fought shoulder to shoulder in that historic Battle of Monte Cassino during World War II in Italy.
This visit of Prime Minister Modi brings out the rich historical relations and shared history between India and Poland.
