Bangladesh Interim Government Chief Yunus Set to Attend BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand

The 84-year-old Nobel peace laureate was sworn into office on August 8 to replace the 76-year-old Hasina, who stepped down in shock and fled to India as bloody protests broke out over a controversial job quota system.

Bangladesh's Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, is planning to go to Bangkok next month to attend the sixth BIMSTEC summit. Tuesday's report said his visit to Bangkok will be his first foreign jaunt since he took charge of the interim government, after the removal of Premier Sheikh Hasina.

Yunus will be in Bangkok from September 3-5 for the sixth Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation summit, which has been confirmed by a senior official at the foreign ministry of Dhaka Tribune.

This will be the first foreign tour for Yunus since he took over as head of the interim government which replaced the President, Iajuddin Ahmed. BIMST-EC, a regional grouping, was created by seven countries belonging to South and Southeast Asia -- Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Srijson, and Thailand.

The meeting is expected to arrive at an agreement on maritime transport cooperation which will further increase trade and commerce among member countries. Bangladesh will assume the chairmanship after the summit.

A two-day retreat of foreign ministers of BIMSTEC was just conducted in India for reviewing and further development of ongoing cooperation.
