Pew Research Indicates Asian-Americans Emerge as the Fastest-Growing Group of Eligible Voters in the US

According to projections from the Washington-based think tank, an estimated 15.0 million Asian Americans will be eligible to cast their votes in November, constituting 6.1% of the total eligible voter population.

A recent study reveals that Asian-Americans have emerged as the most rapidly growing demographic of eligible voters in the United States over the past two decades, particularly since 2020, as the nation gears up for a crucial presidential election. The Pew Research Center's findings indicate a remarkable 15% increase, equivalent to approximately 2 million eligible voters, within the last four years. This growth surpasses the three percent average for all eligible voters during the same period and even exceeds the 12 percent increase observed in Hispanic eligible voters.

According to projections from the Washington-based think tank, an estimated 15.0 million Asian Americans will be eligible to cast their votes in November, constituting 6.1% of the total eligible voter population. However, only 58% of the entire Asian American demographic is eligible to vote, a lower percentage compared to the 72% eligibility rate within the overall U.S. population. The study attributes this difference to a significant portion of Asian Americans being immigrants who are not U.S. citizens.

Notably, Asian Americans are unique among major racial or ethnic groups in having a higher percentage of eligible voters who are naturalized citizens rather than U.S.-born citizens, with 56% falling into the former category. Among Asian eligible voters, 41% are aged 50 and older, boasting high levels of educational attainment, including a notable prevalence of postgraduate degrees.

The study also points out that more than half (55%) of Asian-American eligible voters are concentrated in just five states. Predictably, California holds the largest number, with 4.4 million eligible voters, comprising 31% of the entire U.S. Asian electorate. Other states with substantial Asian-American eligible voter populations include New York (1.2 million), Texas (1.1 million), Hawaii (580,000), and New Jersey (575,000). It's worth noting that in Hawaii, Asian Americans make up 55% of the electorate, making it the only state where a non-White, non-Hispanic ethnic group holds the majority. These findings underscore the growing influence of the Asian-American electorate, particularly in key states, and suggest a leaning towards the Democratic party among this demographic.
