Situation at Chernobyl nuke plant dangerous: Ukraine

Ukraine's Presidential Office on Thursday warned that the situation at Chernobyl was "very dangerous" after an emergency power outage was reported at the now-defunct nuclear power plant. The adviser warned that since "these elements have been cut off from stable access to power", it posed a "threat to the whole of Europe. And, of course, to Russia itself". According to the presidential advisor, Russia is targeting the nuclear plants in Ukraine to "subdue its neighbours".

Iran calls nuke deal parties for immediate 'political decisions' in talks

A senior Iranian diplomat said it is possible to make a successful conclusion in the Vienna talks on restoring the 2015 nuclear deal if relevant parties make the right political decisions immediately to lift US sanctions. The Iranian envoy stressed that several IAEA reports have shown "transparency in Iran's nuclear program and activities". Tehran retaliated by scrapping some of its commitments. The US has been indirectly involved in the Vienna talks.
Russian shelling in Kharkiv kills 4 people

Ukraine's State Emergency Services (SES) on Thursday said that heavy Russian shelling in Kharkiv led to the deaths of four people, including two children, while a shopping mall in the centre of the country's second city was destroyed. According to the SES update posted on Facebook, the Russian forces carried out shelling and aerial bombardment in residential areas of Kharkiv and the region's villages on Wednesday night.
SpaceX launches 48 new Starlink satellites into orbit

Elon Musk's space venture SpaceX has successfully launched 48 new Starlink satellites into orbit. The new batch of satellites was launched on Wednesday aboard a two-stage Falcon 9 rocket, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 8.45 a.m., the company said. During a live stream of the launch, SpaceX's launch director said: "Time to let the American broomstick fly and hear the sounds of freedom."

NASA to get over $24 bn in new US budget bill for 2022

NASA will get over $24 billion for space missions for fiscal year 2022, if the US Congress is able to pass a newly-devised omnibus spending bill. The funding package allocates a total of $1.5 trillion throughout the government. The funds are about $760 million less than what US President Joe Biden had requested last year, Space.com reported. In the US, the fiscal year runs from October 1 through September 30.
Discovery suspends operations in Russia amid war on Ukraine

Discovery has suspended all operations in Russia amid the country's war on Ukraine. Around 15 channels that operate through Media Alliance — a joint venture with Russias National Media Group — will go off air from Wednesday. Under the new law, journalists who call the war a "war" could be prosecuted and sentenced to prison.
