The Iran International News reported that Masoud Pezeshkian, one of the strong reformists from the land of Iran and the former Minister of Health, won the 14th presidential election. He defeated Saeed Jalili, his rival, with 16,384,402 votes out of 30,573,931 votes in the second round.
The turnout was smaller, however, than in the first round, at 49.8 per cent, with more than half of the eligible voters heeding calls to boycott in a marked departure from the initial phase.
The voting for the presidential runoff began Friday morning, pitting Pezeshkian against Jalili regarded as a conservative and former chief nuclear negotiator with world powers.
Voting began on June 28 and initial results announced by Iran's Election Headquarters spokesman, Mohsen Eslami, placed Pezeshkian at 42.6 percent over Jalili's 38.8 percent. Neither candidate won the first round as neither took more than 50 percent.
The 14th presidential election in Iran was due to be held in 2025 but was brought forward after President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash on May 19.
