"Our country has voted decisively for change and a return of politics to public service," he said.

But "changing a country is not like flicking a switch", said Starmer, with the world becoming "more volatile".

He conceded that the road to this promised land will be long and arduous, warning that it takes time to change a country, never mind one located in an increasingly unpredictable world.

Starmer promised immediate action to achieve them, committed to improving the conditions upon which working-class families - like his own - rely.

"If I asked you now whether you believed that Britain will be better for your children, I know too many of you will say no -- and so my government will fight until you believe again," he said.
