Former PM Imran Khan and Wife Remanded to Anti-Corruption Agency in New Corruption Investigation

NAB, taking up a fresh case related to the Toshakhana, brought both of them before Judge Muhammad Ali Warraich at Adiala Jail amidst security concerns. Following homework by both sides' arguments, the court remanded them to eight days and ordered them to appear on July 22 but with an option to extend this period up to 40 days.

An eight-day remand was granted to anti-corruption authorities by a Pakistan court on Friday for investigating a new graft case against imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The former prime minister and his wife were remanded into custody following their conviction regarding their marriage that was quashed by the National Accountability Bureau in its brief order, with directions to release them forthwith unless they were required in other cases.

While the proceedings were going on, Khan first objected to no media person being present in the courtroom and walked out of it, asserting that he would not attend unless the media is allowed. After the media personnel were allowed, Khan declared his wife innocent of Toshakhana, stating that she has nothing to do with i. Bibi's rearrest followed as he was about to be released.

Khan slammed personal attacks on his wife leveled without naming anybody, pointing toward higher authorities. Khan said that the accountability watchdog was working in a robotic way and had indulged in exaggerated statements in earlier cases. Slamming the recent legal tussles, more so after the recent verdict by the Apex Court declaring his party eligible for reserved seats, Khan's run-ins mark an extension to an unbroken political standoff since his ouster in 2022.
