During the funeral prayers for senior Revolutionary Guards commander Brigadier General Sayyed Razi Mousavi, thousands of people passionately chanted 'Death to Israel,' according to media reports.
Brigadier General Mousavi, laid to rest in Tehran's central Imam Hossein square, held close ties with the late IRGC officer and Quads Force Commander Qasim Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad in 2022.
In a farewell speech, the head of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, lauded Brigadier General Mousavi as one of the most experienced and effective commanders in the Axis of Resistance. Salami highlighted Mousavi's significant role following Soleimani's death, particularly in coordinating armed operations with Syria and Hezbollah, both backed by the IRGC.
Brigadier General Mousavi lost his life in an airstrike near Damascus, Syria's capital, where he played a key role in coordinating Iran's military operations. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi vowed that Israel would face a heavy price for Mousavi's killing.
Israel, in turn, has accused Mousavi of coordinating the supply of arms and materials to Hezbollah. Tensions persist as Israel alleges that Iran, along with the IRGC, supports Hamas and Hezbollah, both of which are perceived to coordinate attacks against Israel.
Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, hinted at a challenging countdown for Tel Aviv in a social media post, adding to the escalating rhetoric between the two nations. The funeral and its aftermath underscore the deep-rooted geopolitical tensions in the region.
