The BJP won the seats of Gorakhpur-Faizabad block graduate, Kanpur block graduate, Bareilly-Moradabad block graduate, Allahabad-Jhansi block teacher and Kanpur block. The BJP contested against the SP for these seats.

Murder case against gangster Mukhtar Ansari after 22 yrs

Ansari was initially a witness in the case, but 22 years later, he has been made an accused. According to a police spokesman, an FIR was lodged at the Mohammadabad police station under Section 302 (for murder) of the IPC. The shootout had taken place at Usri Chatti in Ghazipur district on July 15, 2001, between Ansari and his arch rival Brijesh Singh.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, observed that a segment of the society would be left out if elections were held without reservation. The bench, also comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha, said: "We cannot have a vacuum in governance", as it noted that the term of some local bodies would come to end on January 31.
SC's 'Triple Test' for OBC quota in local body polls pits state govts against it

Most recently, Uttar Pradesh moved the Supreme Court against the Allahabad High Court order, which asked it to proceed with urban local body elections without reservation for OBCs. The high court noted that the government is yet to fulfil the triple test requirement laid down by the Supreme Court for such reservation. In the past, the triple test had haunted the Maharashtra government, which pursued a rigorous legal battle in the apex court, and also troubled the Madhya Pradesh government.

Bahujan Samaj Party President Mayawati on Tuesday announced the appointment of Vishwanath Pal as the party's Uttar Pradesh President. Pal is a resident of Ayodhya. Mayawati also appointed outgoing UP President Bhim Rajbhar as coordinator of Bihar. In a series of tweets, Mayawati said that she was confident that Vishwanath Pal would bring OBCs into the party fold.
Mukhtar Ansari convicted, gets 10-year jail in Gangsters Act case

His aide Bhim Singh has also been awarded a ten-year sentence by the court. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs five lakh each on the two. This is the first case in which Ansari has been convicted by the court. It relates to the murder of Avadesh Rai, brother of Congress zonal president Ajai Rai, in 1996.
