Rajbhar and his over-the-top statements during the campaign are now being blamed for the poor show of the BJP in the bypoll.

The SP victory is significant since these by polls were positioned as a first face-off between the NDA and the INDIA.

As soon as he learnt of his Secretary’s detention, Shivpal and his supporters reached the police station. Within half an hour, hundreds of party workers also reached the police station and started shouting slogans. Akhilesh Yadav took strong exception to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who reportedly held Muslims responsible for the rising prices of vegetables, saying "Miyan (Muslims) vendors are responsible for the rise in prices of vegetables in the city. Most of the vegetable vendors who are increasing the price, belong to the Miyan community."

On the basis of this report, the order was sent to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Rampur, Ashok Kumar Shukla, on behalf of the State Secretary, Home Affairs (Police), A.V. Rajamouli, the official added. The SP told journalists that as per the government's recommendations, the policemen engaged in the Y-category security of Azam Khan have been withdrawn.

After the luncheon meeting at Pragathi Bhavan, the official residence of the Chief Minister, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister returned home.There was no official word as to what transpired during the meeting. Both the leaders did not speak to the media after the meeting and the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) or the BRS also.

The RLD spokesman Anil Dubey said that owing to his prior engagement abroad, RLD President Jayant Chaudhary will not be attending the opposition meeting in Patna. The party, however, said it had extended "full support" and "commitment" to the united opposition meeting.

Arvind Kejriwal, accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Delhi minister Atishi and AAP MP Sanjay Singh, met Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow on Wednesday evening to seek his support. Later talking to reporters, Kejriwal said that if non-BJP parties join hands, they can defeat the controversial ordinance in Rajya Sabha where they have an upper hand in numbers.

He was convicted under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between two groups), 505 (statement conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code and section 125 of the Representation of People Act 1951. Azam Khan, after being convicted in the case, was sentenced to three years in prison. He had appealed against the order, after which he was acquitted.
