Meta shuts Pak hackers targeting Indian officials via honey trapping, malware

Apart from India, the group of hackers in Pakistan -- known in the security industry as APT36 -- targeted people in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, according to Meta's quarterly 'Adversarial Threat Report'. "Our investigation connected this activity to state-linked actors in Pakistan," Meta said.
Sheryl Sandberg officially steps down as Meta COO

Meta has appointed chief growth officer Javier Olivan as tne new CEO who took charge from August 1, the company revealed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the US. Sandberg will remain a Meta employee through September 30, after which she will continue as a board member.
WhatsApp banned over 22 lakh bad accounts in India in June

WhatsApp had banned over 19 lakh bad accounts in the country in May. The messaging platform also received 632 grievance reports in June within the country, and the accounts "actioned" were 64. In May, WhatsApp received 528 grievance reports and the accounts "actioned" were 24.
Meta withdraws plan over new privacy policy update

The decision came as the Personal Information Protection Commission has been looking into whether the upcoming privacy policy update by Meta runs afoul of domestic law, citing government official, reports Yonhap. The company has, since late May, sent out notifications to South Korean users of Facebook and another Meta-owned platform Instagram, demanding consent on new terms and conditions of its updated privacy policy set to go into effect on August 9.

Meta to shut down its social app for couples 'Tuned'

Users began receiving a notification about the impending shutdown last week, advising them to download their data before September 19, when the app will cease to work, reports TechCrunch. Tuned was a project under Meta's New Product Experimentation (NPE) Team, which was initially formed to build consumer-facing apps that would allow Meta to test out new features and gauge people's reactions.
WhatsApp may let you keep disappearing messages even after they are dead

According to WABetaInfo report, the disappearing messages can be viewed within chat info in a new section called 'Kept messages', and all people in the conversation can open this section. When disappearing messages are turned on in a certain chat, they cannot be starred, but they can only be kept.
Zuckerberg, Sandberg set to be deposed in Cambridge Analytica lawsuit

Meta open sources early-stage AI translation tool

According to The Verge, the company is open-sourcing the project in the hopes that others will build on its work. The AI model is part of an ambitious R&D project by Meta to create a so-called "universal speech translator," which the company sees as important for growth across its many platforms -- from Facebook and Instagram to developing domains like VR and AR.
