The spin legend died at the age of 77 at his farmhouse in Jaunapur, near here, on Monday after battling a prolonged illness.

It was his aura as one of the greatest left-arm spinners the game had seen, which gave Bedi the audacity to be upfront and undiplomatic at times. His words never had the loop and spin that Bedi put in his bowling. At the core of his heart, Bishan Singh Bedi was always anti-establishment and fought with the BCCI administrators for his teammates and fellow cricketers. 

Bedi, considered to be one of the greatest left-arm spinners to have played the game, was part of the famous Indian spin quartet alongside Erapalli Prasanna, B.S. Chandrashekar and S. Venkataraghavan that won India many matches in both home and overseas conditions in the 1970s.  

As a result, he will now miss India’s clash against New Zealand at HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Sunday. “The all-rounder was taken for scans and is advised rest. He will be under the constant supervision of the BCCI Medical Team,” said the BCCI in a medical update.

The absence of spectators in the opening games of the 2023 World Cup drew speculation over crowd presence in the stadium. On Thursday there was little interest in the World Cup 2023 opening between the reigning champions England, and the winners of the 2019 tournament, New Zealand.

The ICC Men's ODI World Cup is scheduled to kick off at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 5 with a rematch of the 2019 final between England and runners-up New Zealand. As per the official schedule, 48 matches will be played across 10 venues from October 5 to November 19.

BCCI also added the general sale of tickets for all matches of the tournament will be starting from September 8 at 8pm IST, following its discussions with the hosting state associations.

In an e-auction conducted by the BCCI on Thursday, Viacom18 beat competition from Sony Sports Network and Disney Star to get both TV and digital for broadcasting 88 matches, for a cumulative figure of INR 5,963 crores, which translates to INR 67.75 crores per game for the 2023-28 cycle.
