Meta's Threads Surges into Top 10 as Downloads Tripled in December; X Drops to No. 36

Despite experiencing a decline in daily downloads from September to the end of the year, Threads saw a resurgence in growth in December. The app had an impressive launch, with 100 million people registering within its first five days.

In December of the previous year, Meta's competitor Threads observed significant growth, with downloads tripling and securing a place in the top 10 most downloaded apps on both the App Store and Google Play. App intelligence firm Appfigures reported that Threads recorded 12 million new downloads on the App Store, ranking it at number four in the Top Charts by downloads. On Google Play, the app witnessed 16 million downloads, securing the eighth spot and becoming the sixth-most popular app in terms of new installations across both platforms.

While Threads secured a spot in the top 10 apps for downloads in December, it did not break into the top 5. However, its parent company, Instagram, claimed the top spot with a combined 54 million installs from both the App Store and Google Play, surpassing TikTok.

In contrast, Threads' direct rival, X, formerly known as Meta's micro-blogging site, continued to feel the effects of its rebranding. Appfigures reported approximately 8.5 million installations for X in December, ranking it as the 29th-most downloaded app on the App Store and the 46th on Google Play.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Meta, announced in the previous month that Threads is now available to users in the European Union, providing the app with an opportunity to reach more than 448 million citizens in Europe.
