Union Minister Suresh Gopi Reaffirms Indira Gandhi's Legacy as 'Mother of the Nation

This is not a new sentiment of Suresh Gopi, who again declared his reverence for Indira Gandhi, calling her his most revered political leader. When he was asked about his homage sent to Karunakaran and his wife, he made it clear that it was a personal gesture of him, which need not be discussed in the open. It is in this connection that he even acknowledged that Karunakaran sided with Indira Gandhi because of the great patronage extended by her, which allowed him to undertake work with great effect in Kerala.

In what can be termed as controversial remarks, BJP leader and newly inducted Union Minister in Modi's cabinet in his third term, Suresh Gopi described late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as 'Bharatha Mathavu'. He made the remark during a visit to his constituency, Thrissur. The well-known Malayalam actor paid homage at the samadhi of giant Congress leader- former Kerala Chief Minister late K. Karunakaran-along with his wife. Elaborating on the purpose of his visit, he said, " Karunakaran, who is like an Amma to me, and Indira Gandhi were giants in the Kerala's and country's politics respectively."

Suresh Gopi has won the Trissur Lok Sabha seat with a huge majority defeating CPI's V.S. Sunilkumar with a margin of over 72,000 votes.
