The Supreme Court rejected Arvind Kejriwal's plea seeking a 7-day extension of his interim bail in a corruption case pertaining to the Delhi liquor policy. The SC registry rejected the plea on the ground that Chief Minister Kejriwal could have gone to the trial court for a regular bail and hence the application was not maintainable.
Earlier on May 10, the apex court had granted Kejriwal interim bail to enable him to participate in the campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections and ordered him to surrender on June 2, a day after the polling gets over. However, the latest plea for extension was not connected with the main petition and the verdict on the challenge to his arrest was already reserved.
Kejriwal pleaded for an extension of interim bail on health grounds. The AAP, in its plea, said Kejriwal had lost substantial weight, and ketones in his body were elevated, indicating some major health complications. Medical experts from Max Hospital recommended a PET-CT scan among a series of other tests that required a 7-day extension.
Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 for his alleged role in the Delhi Excise policy scam. He was later lodged in Tihar Jail until his interim bail was granted.
