In a landmark acknowledgement of India’s profound cultural and philosophical roots, UNESCO has added the Bhagavad Gita and Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra to its esteemed Memory of the World Register.
This global recognition has been hailed as a major milestone for the nation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his pride, calling it “a proud moment for every Indian across the world.”
A moment of pride for every Indian across the world! The inclusion of the Gita and Natyashastra in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register is a global recognition of our ageless wisdom and rich heritage. The Bhagwad Gita and Natyashastra have nurtured civilisation and consciousness for centuries. Their wisdom still inspires the world," the Prime Minister shared on X.
Modi also re-tweeted a post that was first put up by Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who first broke the news. Shekhawat termed the achievement as "a historic moment for Bharat's civilisational heritage."
"The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita & Bharat Muni's Natyashastra are now part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. This global recognition celebrates India's wisdom and artistic brilliance down the ages," Shekhawat said in his post. "These immortals are not just literary jewels—They are philosophical and aesthetic pillars that have shaped Bharat's weltanschauung and thought, sentiment, way of life, and self-expression."
The addition of these sacred works increases India's total entries in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register to 14. The initiative seeks to safeguard invaluable documentary heritage of global importance.
The Bhagavad Gita, celebrated for its wise spiritual guidance, and Natyashastra, a seminal treatise on drama, music, and dance, have been steadfast pillars of India's immense intellectual and cultural heritage for centuries.
