Reacting to the viral video showing Rahul Gandhi at a nighclub in Kathmandu, the party on Tuesday clarified that the former Congress chief was in Nepal to attend the marriage of a journalist and said that it was not a crime.
The viral video showing Rahul Gandhi at a nightclub in Kathmandu, has sparked a huge controversy in India.
"Rahul Gandhi went to a friendly country, Nepal, to participate in a marriage function of a friend who also happens to be a journalist. It has still not become a crime in this country to attend a marriage. Maybe after today, the BJP may decide (if) it is illegal to attend a marriage and a crime to have friends," said congress Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala.
The video gave an opportunity to the ruling BJP, to take a jibe at Rahul Gandhi and Congress. The BJP leader and Bihar Minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain claimed that Rahul Gandhi was more interested in attending parties than running his own party.
"Nothing can stop Rahul Gandhi from doing parties. He is more involved in parties, rather than running his own party. We work for our political parties, but he attends parties," he said.
BJP's Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also slammed Rahul Gandhi and called him a "full-time tourist and a part-time politician, who is filled with hypocrisy."
Reacting to all such criticisms by the saffron party, Congress leader Surjewala recalled how PM Modi too visited Lahore to attend a marriage function during Nawaz Sharif's reign in 2015. Surjewala said, "Rahul Gandhi has not gone to Nepal to cut Nawaz Sharif's cake, uninvited like PM Modi."
