Voting underway to elect India's next Vice President
The voting, which began at 10 a.m., will conclude at 5 p.m. After counting of votes in the evening, the next Vice President will be elected. The Vice President will take the oath of office on August 11, as the term of the incumbent Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10. Meanwhile, India's second largest Opposition party after the Congress, the Trinamool Congress had decided to abstain from the voting, saying it 'not been consulted' on Margaret Alva's candidature.
VP election today to witness fight between Dhankar, Alva
While the number jacks up in favour of the NDA candidate, Alva, a senior politician, has pitched for a conscious vote. The voting will begin in Parliament House complex and MPs will cast their ballots. The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament, in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote and the voting in such election is by secret ballot.
India reports 19,406 fresh Covid cases, 49 deaths
With the fresh fatalities, the death toll mounted to 5,26,649. Active caseload the country has marginally declined to 1,34,793 cases, accounting for 0.31 per cent of the country's total positive cases. The recovery of 19,928 patients in the last 24 hours took the cumulative tally to 4,34,65,552. Consequently, the recovery rate stands at 98.50 per cent. Meanwhile, Daily Positivity rate has marginally declined to 4.96 per cent, while the Weekly Positivity Rate currently also stands at 4.63 per cent.
'Approval accorded for procurement of military equipment worth Rs 1.8 lakh crore'
The AoN is the first step towards any defence procurement, which is followed by tendering and contracting. "In the period 2020-21 to 2022-23 (till June 30, 2022), 59 AoNs amounting to Rs 1,83,778.34 crore have been accorded and 91 contracts amounting to Rs 1,19,045.3 crore have been concluded," Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt said while replying to a question in Lok Sabha on Friday.

The government said, "Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence, responded to a request for information received from Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) in February 2019 for LCA class aircraft. The Government has taken several policy initiatives in the past few years and brought in reforms to encourage indigenous design, development and manufacturing of defence equipment in the country, thereby expanding production.
Operation Black Thunder in focus as old pic of Ajit Doval with Rajiv Gandhi goes viral
It is being said that this picture is from 1988. In the very old picture, Doval is seen talking to the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on some issue. The former IB director M.K. Narayanan is also seen in the picture. It is said that at that time Ajit Doval was Operational Director in the Intelligence Bureau. Another theory is that this picture dates back to Operation Black Thunder that happened in Amritsar at that time.
India, China hold military talks to discuss airspace violations, provocations by Chinese Air Force
Government sources told IANS: "During the military talks, the Indian side strongly objected to Chinese flight activities for over a month near the eastern Ladakh sector and asked them to refrain from such provocative activities." The talks also come at a time when China is having strained relations with several countries, including the US, over a high-profile US leader's visit to Taiwan and the firing of ballistic missiles in the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone.

According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Modi congratulated Marcos Jr. on becoming the 17th President of the Southeast Asian country following his victory in the presidential election in May. The two leaders reviewed various areas of bilateral engagement, and expressed satisfaction at the rapid growth of cooperation between the two countries in recent years, the PMO said.

Indigenously made laser-guided anti-tank missiles successfully tested
The missiles hit with precision and successfully destroyed the targets at two different ranges, officials said, adding the telemetry systems have recorded the satisfactory flight performance of the missiles. The all-indigenous laser-guided ATGM employs a tandem High Explosive Anti-Tank warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour protected armoured vehicles.
