In a tweet, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Congratulations to Mamata Didi on taking oath as West Bengal's Chief Minister." Banerjee took oath as Chief Minister on Wednesday in the shadow of Covid pandemic and reports of violence in some parts of the state. Banerjee, in her trademark white Sari and shawl, took oath in Bengali.

Union Health Ministry said, "Carried out on a war footing, the two plants were swiftly airlifted from Coimbatore and installed yesterday. Both the plants will start supplying oxygen by today evening." Union Minister of States for Health, Ashwini Kumar Choubey tweeted, "Installation of two high flow medical oxygen plants funded by PM-CARES at AIIMS, New Delhi and RML Hospital completed. Oxygen Supply to Covid patients to begin from today."

Supreme Court quashes Maratha quota in Maharashtra, says reservations can't exceed 50%
A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan allowed no breach of 50 per cent ceiling to give more reservation, as it refused to consider reviewing Indra Sawhney verdict of 1992. "Exceeding ceiling limit of 50 percent laid down by Indra Sawhney is violative of Articles 14 and 15," said the top court. The top court said the people from Maratha community cannot be declared as educationally and socially backward.

Foreign terrorist trapped as Sopore encounter rages on
Sources said one foreign terrorist involved in the killing of two councillors and a policeman is trapped in the encounter. Earlier on Tuesday, an encounter started between terrorists and security forces at Nathipora area of Sopore in North Kashmir's Baramulla district, officials said.
