Kanpur Metro Rail: All you need to know about Rs 11.000 crore project in UP

The entire length of Kanpur Metro Rail project is of 32 km out of which 9 km long "priority stretch" has been completed so far. Following the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi, accompanied by UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, took a ride from the IIT metro station to Geeta Nagar. In poll bound Uttar Pradesh, the inauguration becomes significant as it is one of the key developmental projects of the BJP government in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the completed section of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project worth Rs 11.000 crore. The entire length of Kanpur Metro Rail project is of 32 km out of which 9 km long "priority stretch" has been completed so far. 1. The first corridor or priority stretch was inaugurated today by PM Narendra Modi, is 9-km long and covers a route between IIT Kanpur to Motijheel.

2. The entire length of Kanpur Metro Rail project is of 32-km. Project comprises of two corridors, the first corridor is of 23.8 km  from IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta while the second corridor is 8.6 km long from Chandrashekar Azad Agriculture University to Barra area of Kanpur city.

3. Kanpur Metro project is the fastest built project in the country being built at a cost of over ₹11,000 crore. With this project, the city can tackle traffic jam issues and congestion issues.

4. The Metro rail project is equipped with facilities such as 56 USB charging points in every train, emergency buttons, use of 100% LED lights to reduce energy consumption, LCD panels to give information and CCTV cameras.

5. The foundation stone of the Kanpur Metro project was laid by the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav with the then Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu in 2016. However, the current government claims the actual Work on the project was started by present government under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath on November 15, 2019 and a 9 km long "priority stretch" of the 32.5 km long route has been completed so far. While trial run on this 9km stretch from IIT to Motijheel took place on 10 November 2021.
