There are peaceful protests that have broken out everywhere across US campuses against Israel. Many call for an end to US support for Israel. The students push for divestiture from companies, which do business with the country. Some instances of violence have been witnessed, like overtaking of Columbia University by students and arrests by police.

President Joe Biden has addressed the issue. He has said peaceful protest must be allowed but denounced violence and vandalism. He has told people to preserve the rights of every individual, condemned anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, and told that he had no tolerance for discrimination against proponents of Palestine.

The authorities have also said there are agitators from outside the university community, and this may mean that some of the violence is instigated by people who do not have any direct interest in the university.
