As of Friday, India reported 761 fresh COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths attributed to the viral disease, according to the latest data released by the Union health ministry.
The count of active COVID-19 cases witnessed a slight decline, dropping to 4,334 from 4,423 reported on Thursday, as indicated by the data updated at 8 am.
Kerala currently holds the highest number of active cases at 1,249, followed by Karnataka with 1,240, Maharashtra with 914, Tamil Nadu with 190, and Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh with 128 active cases each.
Among the 12 recent deaths, Kerala reported five, Karnataka reported four, Maharashtra reported two, and Uttar Pradesh reported one, according to the data.
The daily case count had remained in double digits until December 5 but began rising again, possibly influenced by cold weather conditions and the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant.
During the peak of the pandemic in early 2020, daily cases were in the lakhs. Across the country over the past four years, more than 4.5 crore people have been infected, and over 5.3 lakh have succumbed to the virus.
The count of recovered individuals has surpassed 4.4 crore, resulting in a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as indicated on the ministry's website.
The vaccination drive continues, with the administration of 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines across the country, according to the data available on the ministry's website.
