India Records 756 New Covid Cases and Five Fatalities

Until December 5, 2023, daily cases had dwindled to double digits. However, a resurgence followed due to a new variant emergence and colder weather conditions.

The Health Ministry in India reported 756 fresh Covid cases, with 4,049 active infections as of the latest update on Sunday. Over a span of 24 hours, five fatalities were recorded—two each in Kerala and Maharashtra, and one in Jammu and Kashmir—according to the data released by the ministry at 8 am.

Until December 5, 2023, daily cases had dwindled to double digits. However, a resurgence followed due to a new variant emergence and colder weather conditions. On December 31, 2023, the highest spike post-December 5 was noted, with 841 cases reported, as per official sources.

Around 92% of the total active cases are recuperating under home isolation. India has witnessed three COVID-19 waves in the past, notably the peak during the Delta wave in April-June 2021, recording 4,14,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths on May 7, 2021.

Since the pandemic's onset in early 2020, over 4.5 crore individuals have been infected, with over 5.3 lakh reported fatalities. More than 4.4 crore people have recovered, contributing to a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as indicated by the ministry's website.

The country has administered approximately 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines, according to the ministry's statistics.
