Detention of IIT Student Allegedly Joining ISIS in Assam: Authorities

This incident occurred shortly after the arrest of Haris Farooqi, also known as Harish Ajmal Farukhi, the purported head of ISIS in India, along with his associate Anurag Singh, alias Rehan, in Dhubri district after they had crossed over from Bangladesh.

The student from IIT-Guwahati, suspected of pledging allegiance to ISIS and attempting to travel to join the group, was apprehended at Hajo on Saturday evening, according to police reports.

Director-General of Police GP Singh confirmed the detainment, stating that the student had been intercepted while traveling, and further legal actions would ensue.

Additional Superintendent of Police Kalyan Kumar Pathak mentioned that an investigation was initiated upon receiving an email from the student declaring his intention to join ISIS. The authorities at IIT-Guwahati notified that the student had been missing since noon, with his mobile phone switched off. He was identified as a fourth-year student from Okhla, Delhi.

After locating the student in the Hajo area with the assistance of locals, he was brought to the STF office for questioning. A black flag resembling that of ISIS was reportedly discovered in his hostel room and sent for verification to specialized agencies.

Pathak stated that the investigation was ongoing, focusing on the motive behind the email and the seized items, while details disclosed by the student were not yet disclosed.
