India is all set to launch its vaccination drive against the Covid-19 pandemic from January 16 (Saturday) at 3,000 sites. The number of sites will increase up to 5,000 by the end of the month, Time of India (TOI) reported.
On the first day, each site is going to have around 100 recipients on and the number can be different across states based on the enrolment of healthcare workers and duration of vaccination.

"We will start with 3,000 sites and go up to 5,000 sites over the next two weeks. Our aim is to further increase this number to 12,000 or even more by March as the program stabilizes and supplies improve. This is a dynamic process and at this stage, our focus is to ensure that everything remains smooth so that people gain confidence," TOI quoted an official as saying.
Only one brand of Covid-19 vaccine (Either Covishield or Covaxin) would be available at a particular site to avoid any confusion. State governments will take the call on deciding which vaccine would be available to which site based on the availability and logistics.
According to the official, the decision of making a particular vaccine available at one site will ensure that beneficiaries are inoculated with the same brand when they come back for the second dose and this is crucial. It will also help avoid any situation of conflict by not giving options to choose from the two approved brands.
All the information related to Covid-19 vaccination will be recorded on an IT platform named "Co-WIN" which is being used for the implementation and the drive.
