China unfurls flag in Galwan valley on first day of new year 2022, Opposition asks Modi govt to break silence

The unfurling of the Chinese flag in Galwan valley came days after the communist party renamed 15 places of Arunachal Pradesh on their map. This was the second time China had renamed places of Arunachal Pradesh. Taking a jibe at the Narendra Modi-led government, the Opposition parties accused it of maintaining silence on this matter.

In yet another show of its belligerence over its claims on Galwan Valley, China unfurled its flag in the valley on January 1, 2022.  Various Chinese state media outlets put out the video of the unfurling of the Chinese flag in the Galwan valley.

“In the Galwan Valley near the border with #India, under the characters 'Never yield an inch of land,' PLA soldiers send new year greetings to Chinese people on January 1, 2022,” reported Global Times.

“Our tricolour looks good in Galwan. There should be a response to China. Modiji, break the silence,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter.

Earlier on December 30, rejecting the renaming of places in Arunachal Pradesh, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said: "China had also sought to assign such names in April 2017. Arunachal Pradesh has always been, and will always be an integral part of India. Assigning invented names to places in Arunachal Pradesh does not alter this fact."

Rahul Gandhi took the opportunity to land a fresh blow on the BJP government and shared a tweet on Friday which said that the government was rejoicing India's glorious victory in 1971 but those are hollow words.

"Just a few days back, we were remembering India's glorious victory in 1971. For the security and victory of the country, wise and strong decisions are needed. Hollow words do not win," the Congress leader wrote on Twitter.

India and China have witnessed several clashes over the Galwan valley. A violent clash on June 15, 2020, between the Indian Army and the Chinese military killed several on both sides. The fight between the Armies had killed nearly 20 Indian soldiers and an unspecified number of Chinese personnel. China had officially announced the names of 5 soldiers killed in the Galwan clash for the first time in February 2021. The clashes over the valley had further complicated the border scenarios between the two neighboring countries of India and China.
