As Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma boarded his Emirates flight from Delhi to Dubai, he was ready for the start of his overseas journey. After settling into his seat, he found his phone battery low and realized he required a charger.
Sitting beside him was a young man who noticed his plight. Without hesitation, the young passenger shared his international plug and charging cord with Sarma. Although it was a small act, it had a quiet depth—a gesture of kindness that briefly bonded two strangers. Sarma, appreciative of the help, smiled and took the offer, inserting his device.
The journey went smoothly, and as drowsiness overcame him, the Chief Minister slept. Upon waking up, the plane had already touched down at Dubai—and the benevolent stranger was nowhere to be found.
In the midst of the typical hustle and bustle of people getting off the plane, rolling suitcases, and overhead speakers announcing, Sarma did not catch one important detail: he was still carrying the charger and cable with him.
The young man had gotten out of the plane, without his belongings, probably not knowing that his little act of kindness would have a lasting impact.
Subsequently, upon being in Amsterdam, Sarma was filled with guilt—not only for having held on to the charger inadvertently, but also for not being able to return a good deed in the first place.
Posting on social media, Sarma wrote:
Today morning I traveled on an Emirates flight from Delhi to Dubai, where a good young man shared his international plug and charging wire with me. Sadly, he got off in Dubai while I slept, and I was unable to return them. I've just arrived in Amsterdam and am very sorry for not returning his items.". If this message reaches him, please send me a direct message so I can arrange to return your charger and cable promptly. Thank you for your kindness, and I regret any inconvenience caused @emirates.”
The message touched many online, who appreciated Sarma’s honesty and effort to make amends. It was widely shared, as people hoped to help trace the thoughtful co-passenger.
Committed to doing justice to the young man, Sarma also approached the Assam Police, who immediately initiated attempts to trace him.
Keeping the public informed, Sarma subsequently wrote:
I am glad to tell you that, upon my request, the @assampolice are in the process of determining and sharing the contact information of the gentleman concerned. My staff is sure that this will be done within a couple of hours. This will allow me to return the charger on my way back or at least show appreciation.
In a world that is too frequently shrouded in polarizing news, this touching moment was a soft reminder of the kindness that remains. From what started with a basic exchange of a charger came a powerful story of gratitude, responsibility, and the importance of embracing kindness—no matter how minor.
This momentary encounter, cut through by a mundane act of assistance, had turned into a moving story about human beings and the effect of paying it forward.
