The Central government on Tuesday announced a new defence service recruitment scheme for youngsters- the ‘Agnipath’ scheme. The scheme will allow both men and women to become soldiers for a brief period of 4 years. Selected candidates under the scheme will be known as 'Agniveers' . Agnipath scheme, approved by the PM-led cabinet committee on security, will recruit youth of India aged between 17.5 to 21 years.  However, the complete selection process, written and physical test, aren’t out yet. The motive behind this visionary scheme is to bring a much more youthful and technically adept war fighting force by ensuring a good balance between youthful and experienced personnel in the military. At a press conference, after a Union Cabinet meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “The scheme will increase employment opportunities and aim to create a youthful profile of the armed forces. The ‘Agniveers‘ will be given a good pay package and an exit retirement package after four years of service." Here's all you need to know about this short-term recruitment scheme for soldiers.

 
Agneepath ka Agniveer Scheme | 10 points 

1. Agneepath Scheme will allow the aspirants an opportunity to serve the nation for 4 years as soldiers, to be known as Agniveers.

2. This scheme will enroll all soldiers/sailors/airmen in the Armed forces through a Pan India merit based recruitment. An All India All Class' selection process will be followed by medical fitness and other eligibility criteria.

3. Agneepath Scheme aims to recruit Indian youth aged between 17.5 to 21 years. Both young girls and boys can apply for recruitment.

4. Different educational qualifications will be required for different categories.

5. Agniveers once selected, will hold the ranks of 'personnel below officer rank (PBOR).' They will also wear completely different insignias than the existing ranks.

6. A total of 46,000 soldiers, sailors and airmen will be recruited this year

7. Agniveers will get an annual allowance of  approximately Rs 4.76 lakhs on joining which will further increase upto Rs 6.92 lakhs by the end of their four-year service. Also  the financial package for soldiers under Agnipath includes non-contributory life insurance cover of Rs 48 lakh. After the completion of their service for four years, Agniveers will get a ‘seva nidhi’ package of Rs 11.71 lakhs, which will be interest-free.

8. In the unfortunate event of death, a non-contributory insurance cover is kept for each ‘Agniveer’ worth ₹1 crore alongwith this full pay for the unserved period.

9. They would get a Target Acquisition Assembly, Protective special clothing including BPJ, ballistic helmet, goggles, multispectral cam clothing, tactical gloves, and exoskeleton for some. Their weapon sub-system will include an assault rifle, machine pistol, UBGL and ammunition. Also they will get a computer and communication sub system with sensor-equipped body armour, heads-up display, and signal interference unit.

10. Based on the capabilities and performance of Agniveers, up to 25% of them from each batch can be included in the regular cadre of the Armed forces. After completion of their tenure, they will also receive a certificate of appreciation.
