Bureaucratic reshuffle at Centre, Aramane Giridhar to be new Defence Secretary

Aramane Giridhar, currently, Secretary, Road Transport and Highways. has been appointed as Officer on Officer on Special Duty, Department of Defence, and will take over as Defence Secretary following superannuation of incumbent Ajay Kumar. As per an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on Wednesday, Nagendra Nath Sinha will take over as Secretary, Steel on December 31.

The weapon will be manufactured at a plant in Korwa in Uttar Pradesh, according to Alexander Mikheev, the head of Rosoboronexport, the Russian state agency for international arms trade, RT reported. "We plan 100 pert cent localisation of the production of the legendary Russian assault rifles in India. In the future, the joint enterprise may ramp up capacity and upgrade to manufacture more advanced models based on the Kalashnikov platform," the agency quoted its chief as saying in a statement issued on Monday.

The remaining 142 items are being indigenised within the timeline of December 2022. Some of the main sub-systems and line replacement units (LRUs) indigenised include magazine fire fighting system for ships, steering gear system and fin stabilisers with control for frigates, pressurised containers for Akash missiles, KOE charge for Konkurs missiles and electric motor, decontamination set and prism optical instrument for battle tanks.

"Providing further impetus to Aatmanirbharta in defence production, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract today with BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd (BAPL) for acquisition of additional dual-role capable surface to curface BrahMos missiles at an overall approximate cost of Rs 1,700 crore under Buy-Indian Category," the ministry said in a statement. The induction of these dual-role capable missiles is supposed to significantly enhance the operational capability of Indian Navy.

Proposals have been invited for guns, missiles, drones, counter-drone, loiter munition, communication and optical systems, as per a series of tweets from the Army's Additional Directorate General of Public Information. The Army has also invited the proposals for specialist vehicles, engineering equipment, and alternate energy resources. "In keeping with its commitment to fight the future wars with Indigenous Solutions, Indian Army invites Indian Defence Industry to offer critical defence equipment for Emergency Procurement," it announced.

Speaking after unveiling a statue of Panna Dai, a 16th-century nursemaid, the Defence Minister also said that the Russia-Ukraine war was stopped for a few hours at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hence the government could bring back over 22,000 Indian students from the war-torn region. "Such an incident will never be repeated in the future," he said after unveiling the 9.6 feet tall statue.
