Tom Cruise is famous for taking on demanding shooting schedules, and he's holding nothing back for his new film. The star will reprise his signature role in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, the final installment of the much-loved spy-action franchise, which will hit theaters on May 23.
On Tuesday (April 22), Tom Cruise posted a behind-the-scenes clip from the shoot of the film on X, taking fans through the icy and remote landscape of Svalbard, a place famous for its extreme cold.
Talking about the location, Cruise called Svalbard "just breathtakingly beautiful," further saying, "We are in an absolutely remarkable place to be able to film. It is a unique experience."
Simon Pegg, co-starring with Cruise in the film, observed the extreme weather of filming at the Arctic: "If you want to film in the Ice Cap, you are going with temperatures that are absolutely the most extreme. And of course, the Arctic hit us right on our face."
The director, Christopher McQuarrie, addressed the difficulties of shooting in such a cold climate. He said, "You can't simulate being in minus 40 degrees. Hold your hand out for a couple of seconds and your fingers will freeze."
Hayley Atwell, the other major cast member, underlined how the location adds to the tension and drama of the movie, citing that "being in an environment like that adds to the suspense and drama."
Cruise had similar things to say, explaining that he wanted to present the audience with a real visual experience of Svalbard. "It was a real privilege to do it, and it looks amazing on the screen."
The side note on the video says, "It is an honor to share a place like Svalbard with audiences. It is beautiful in every sense of the term and we can't wait for you to see it in theaters." Svalbard, located halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, is a breathtaking glacial landscape, famous for its untouched beauty and wildlife, such as polar bears.
Cruise is set to recur in the lead role of Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, and Esai Morales also feature in key roles.
