Director Anurag Kashyap on Tuesday apologized for his provocative statement against the Brahmin community, admitting he had crossed the line in using abusive language while in a state of rage.
Kashyap was mired in controversy after making a comment that was widely regarded as disrespectful of the Brahmin community. Conceding his mistake, he claimed to have unfairly generalized and spoken adversely "about the whole community."
There are many from the (Brahmin) community who have been with me and are still with me and they are contributing a lot. Now, all of them are pained by me, my family is pained by me. Many intellectuals, whom I have respect, are pained by my rage and my way of speaking," he expressed in an Instagram statement.
The director, who has already criticized Brahmin-led protests against the release of the film Phule as well as censorship barriers for caste-based films like Santosh and Dhadak 2, conceded that his outburst took away from his true intention and watered down his central message.
"I truly apologize to this society to whom I did not wish to utter these words, but wrote them in a fit of anger in reaction to one's cheap remark. I apologize to all my friends, my family and the (Brahmin) community for my tone and for the abusive language," he wrote, and expressed his resolve to improve on his temper so that such moments are avoided in the future. And if I have to speak about the issue, I will speak the right words. I hope you will pardon me."
Earlier, the 52-year-old director of Gangs of Wasseypur disclosed that he and his family members had been threatened with rape and death after his comments, which he said had been "taken out of context.
This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar. I won't take back what I said. Abuse me all you want. My family didn't say anything. If you want an apology, here it is," Kashyap had said in a previous statement.
