In a shocking revelation included in a recently released BBC documentary, Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, a confidant of Lawrence Bishnoi, candidly confessed to masterminding the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala.
Brar, whose real name is Satinderjit Singh, was long suspected of involvement in the killing, and this is his first public admission.
"In arrogance, he [Moose Wala] committed some errors that could not be forgiven," Brar is quoted to have said in the documentary. "We had no choice but to eliminate him. He had to pay for what he did. It was him or us. As simple as that."
Brar explained the intricacies leading to the rivalry, adding that Moose Wala had been communicating with Lawrence Bishnoi.
"Lawrence was on speaking terms with Sidhu. I do not know through whom they were introduced, and I did not ask. But they did exchange words," he added.
He further asserted that Moose Wala had attempted to seek favors of Bishnoi by sending "good morning" and "good night" messages.
A Tension-Filled Rivalry
The hatred between Moose Wala and Brar allegedly started during a Kabaddi tournament in Punjab.
"Those are people from a village where our competitors are based. He was advertising our competitors. Lawrence and others were angry with him at that time. They warned Sidhu that they would not spare him," Brar said.
Although the tensions mounted, attempts were said to be made to broker a deal. An investigation by the BBC found that Vicky Middukhera, who is thought to have been an intermediary around Bishnoi, attempted to ease the animosity between the two groups. Middukhera, however, was himself murdered in Mohali in August 2021, further fueling the flames.
Brar accused Moose Wala of having abused his political affiliations and financial clout to aid their competitors.
"Everybody was aware of Sidhu's position, the cops probing knew, even journalists probing knew," he asserted. "Sidhu was interacting with politicians and authority figures. He was employing political influence, money, and his means to assist our competitors."
Brar stated that in spite of their complaints, no action was initiated against Moose Wala under the law.
We wanted him punished for what he'd done. He ought to have been arrested. He ought to have been put behind bars. But no one heard our cry. So we took it upon ourselves. When decency falls on deaf ears, it's the gunshot that gets heard."
No Regret, No Remorse
When asked whether his actions were a case of justice or vigilantism, Brar brushed aside the Indian legal system in its entirety.
"Law. Justice. There ain't such a thing. Only the powerful can. [get] justice, not the likes of us. I did what I had to do for my brother. I have no remorse whatever," he stated.
Brar is at present living in Canada and is a designated terrorist under India's Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He has a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol and has a non-bailable arrest warrant against him in relation to the murder.
Sidhu Moose Wala was gunned down during broad daylight near his village in Punjab's Mansa district in May 2022. His car was ambushed and sprayed with more than 100 bullets, with the artist found fatally injured in a shocking attack that left fans and the music fraternity stunned.
