Dakota Johnson thinks that things are kind of crazy in Hollywood now, and mainly because studios just want to remake things too much.
When she recently stopped by Hot Ones, the Materialists actress gave her honest take when host Sean Evans asked her why she thinks the industry has become so afraid to take risks creatively, particularly based on her inside knowledge of how things work behind the scenes.
"I think it's difficult when creative decisions are being made by committee and it's difficult when creative decisions are being made by individuals who don't even really even watch films or know anything about them, and that's generally what's happening a lot," Johnson said.
The Fifty Shades of Grey star continued to point out a trend she observes in Hollywood's choices. "When something succeeds, studios want to continue that so they remake the same stuff, but human beings don't want that. They want new, they want to feel different things, do different things, see different things, so I don't know, I guess it's all just kind of a mess at the moment, isn't it?"
Her comments relate to an increasing trend throughout the entertainment industry: the primacy of intellectual property (IP) and the increasing reliance on franchises. The industry has turned towards sequels, reboots, and spin-offs in recent years, opting for familiarity rather than originality in a bid to minimize financial risk.
It is this risk-averse thinking that has prompted the studios to greenlight revamps of big franchises such as Harry Potter and Twilight, relying on their pre-existing fanbases. TV has also witnessed expansions of existing worlds, including House of the Dragon—a prequel to Game of Thrones—and Young Sheldon, a spin-off from The Big Bang Theory.
Consequently, selling and producing new, untested ideas has become harder, with numerous new projects finding it hard to gain the support of a studio in a climate where established formulas are so prevalent.
