Hollywood A-lister Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth and allegedly last instalment in the legendary spy thriller franchise, received a five-minute standing ovation at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.
Cruise, 62, was at the screening with director Christopher McQuarrie and the ensemble cast of the film. Footage on social media caught the actor on his way down the theatre aisle to resounding applause and cheers from the crowd.
With an emotional address, Cruise thanked his 30-year ride on the franchise. "I'm extremely thankful to be part of this franchise," he said, giving credit to McQuarrie for what he did in four movies to build the series. "Being here in Cannes and to have these moments—as a child, I could never have wished for something like that."
Directed by Paramount Pictures and Skydance, the movie boasts a return of the previous cast with Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, and newcomers Angela Bassett and Hannah Waddingham.
The Mission: Impossible franchise, which started in 1996, is about the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) as they engage in high-risk clandestine missions to stave off global catastrophes. This new release is the epitome of thirty years of exciting espionage capers.
Cannes Film Festival also goes on until May 24.
